What is Eumovate Eczema and Dermatitis Cream 0.05%?

Eumovate Cream is a treatment for eczema and dermatitis, helping to ease irritation caused by flare-ups. It’s ideal for times when your flare-ups cause inflammation, itching, and redness, helping to relieve these symptoms effectively. Eumovate helps you to break the itch-scratch cycle which can cause your skin more irritation and damage as you manage your eczema or dermatitis.

When would I use Eumovate Cream?

Eumovate Cream is used to treat inflammation caused by flare-ups of eczema or dermatitis. These dry skin conditions can cause inflammation, itching, and redness, which this cream can help to treat and control.

Can I use this product for psoriasis?

If you have psoriasis you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Eumovate. Although topical steroids like this cream can be used as a treatment for mild to moderate psoriasis, it may not be the most suitable treatment for you. If a medical professional does recommend using this product to treat your psoriasis, be sure to use it exactly as they have instructed as you should only use it on small or particularly thick areas of skin.

What are eczema and dermatitis?

Eczema is a dry skin condition that makes your skin feel itchy, dry, and irritated. Dermatitis is a type of eczema that’s triggered when you come into contact with something that irritates your skin, such as harsh soaps or disinfectants. Both can affect either small areas of skin or more widespread areas all over your body, commonly affecting hands, feet, and the insides of elbows or knees. When you have a flare-up of eczema or dermatitis, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Inflammation
  • Blisters
  • Redness
  • Dry skin
  • Itching
  • Cracked skin

How will the Clobetasone Butyrate in Eumovate Cream ease my eczema?

The active ingredient in Eumovate Cream is Clobetasone Butyrate, with a strength of 0.05% w/w. Clobetasone is a type of medication called a corticosteroid, which works by suppressing inflammation wherever you apply it. This means that Eumovate reduces symptoms such as redness and itching that are caused by eczema quickly and effectively.

FAQ

  • What is Eumovate Cream, and what is it used for?

Eumovate Cream contains the active ingredient clobetasone butyrate 0.05%, a moderately potent topical corticosteroid. It is used to treat inflammation, itching, and redness caused by flare-ups of eczema and dermatitis. Eumovate works by reducing the release of inflammatory chemicals within the skin cells, helping to calm irritated skin. It is classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) product in a 15g pack size, although larger pack sizes (30g or 100g) require a prescription (NHS, Topical Corticosteroids).

  • How do I apply Eumovate Cream correctly?

Wash and dry your hands before application. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area twice daily and gently rub it in until absorbed. Wash your hands again after application, unless your hands are the area being treated. You should use the smallest amount needed to cover the affected skin. Eumovate should be used for no more than 7 days without direction from a healthcare professional. Once your skin has returned to its normal condition, you may stop using the cream.

  • Can I use Eumovate Cream on my face?

It is generally advised not to use Eumovate on the face unless a doctor has specifically instructed you to do so. The skin on the face is thinner and more sensitive than other parts of the body, which means it may absorb more of the steroid and could be more prone to side effects such as skin thinning. If you have eczema or dermatitis affecting your face, it is important to consult your doctor or pharmacist before applying any topical corticosteroid to this area.

  • What are the possible side effects of Eumovate Cream?

Like all medicines, Eumovate Cream can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Some patients may notice localised skin reactions such as itching, a burning sensation, or redness at the site of application. If you use too much of the product or use it for longer than recommended, less common effects may include skin thinning, changes in skin colour, or increased body hair. Rare side effects can include increased eye pressure (glaucoma) and clouding of the lens (cataracts). If you experience any concerning symptoms, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist (MHRA Yellow Card Scheme).

  • Can I use Eumovate Cream alongside my regular moisturiser?

Yes, and it is generally recommended that you do so. Eumovate should be used alongside your usual emollient (moisturiser) to effectively manage your eczema or dermatitis. Apply the emollient first and allow it to absorb into the skin before applying the Eumovate Cream. This helps to keep the skin hydrated while the corticosteroid addresses the inflammation. Emollients on their own help to maintain the skin barrier, which is important between flare-ups as well.

  • Is Eumovate Cream suitable for children?

Eumovate Cream can be used in children, but it is important to seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist before doing so. Children's skin tends to be thinner and may absorb more of the active ingredient, which increases the risk of side effects. A healthcare professional can advise on the appropriate amount and duration of use for a child. The cream should not be used under occlusive dressings in children unless directed by a doctor.

  • How does Eumovate compare to stronger steroid creams such as Betnovate or Dermovate?

Eumovate is classified as a moderately potent topical corticosteroid, which makes it less potent than creams such as Betnovate (betamethasone valerate, a potent steroid) and Dermovate (clobetasol propionate, a very potent steroid). Eumovate is generally used for mild to moderate eczema and dermatitis flare-ups, whereas stronger steroid creams are typically prescribed when weaker treatments have not been effective. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise which strength is most appropriate for your condition (NICE, Eczema Guidelines).

  • Can I buy Eumovate Cream without a prescription?

A 15g pack of Eumovate Cream is available to purchase over the counter from a pharmacy after a consultation with a pharmacist. Larger pack sizes of 30g or 100g are prescription-only and require a clinical assessment. At Treat Discreet, you will need to complete a short assessment so we can make sure this product is suitable for you. This helps to ensure the medication is being used safely and appropriately for your condition.
